Step Into Kindness: Celebrate Socktober with The Silver City Gospel Mission

When the Silver City air turns crisp and the leaves finally start to fall in Big Ditch Park, many of us reach for our favorite cozy sweaters, boots, and—of course—our warm socks. But for a lot of people who are experiencing homelessness or unstable housing, something as simple as a clean, dry pair of socks is a luxury that’s simply not available.

That’s why every October, communities across the country come together for “Socktober”—a whole month dedicated to collecting and donating socks for those in need.

Why Socks?

Socks may seem like a small and insignificant item in the personal accessories category, but they’re actually the most requested clothing item in homeless shelters. Unlike coats or sweaters, socks wear out quickly, and shelters rarely receive enough new pairs of socks to meet the demand. Without clean socks, unsheltered and unstably sheltered folks are more vulnerable to illness, blisters, and infections. Something so simple becomes a life-altering thing.

How You Can Make a Difference

Getting involved in Socktober is easy yet has a large impact:

  • Donate New Socks – All sizes are needed at the mission, from kids to adults.

  • Host a Sock Drive – Rally your workplace, school, or neighborhood to collect socks together.

  • Spread the Word – Share on social media, tell your friends, and encourage others to give!

Small Action, Big Impact

Every pair of socks donated is a gesture of your dignity, warmth, and care for those less fortunate than you. By joining Socktober, you’re not just providing clothing—you’re letting someone know that they matter.
